Mentoring is quite popular in Tech world. Tech landscape is so vast and deep. It’s hard to navigate it alone. But, when one is ready to start mentoring?
I believe that mentoring is a part of learning itself. One doesn’t have to be the best expert on a subject to help a mentee understand it a bit better. It’s enough to be just a step ahead to be helpful. Often times, a different perspective is enough for a good mentoring session.
Though, mentoring comes with a few challenges:
- Fear of the first step. Starting something new is always hard.
- Lack of free time. Anything we do in our life requires time, the ultimate currency we have.
- Leaving comfort zone. No pain - no gain, as they say.
But after a bit of time invested, we can see benefits as well:
- Deeper understanding of a subject. One needs to know a thing before describing it to another person.
- Improvement of soft skills. Mentoring is mostly about communication.
- Networking. Sometimes network can help a lot (for example during a job search).
- Learning. Mentee can teach you a few tricks along the road.
Happy mentoring ;)
